Welcome to FLY TV, I am Niklaus Bauer. Today, we are doing this...
Today, we are going pike fly fishing.
I will also talk about what kind of gear we use and what flies we use.
We are going to fish the fish that already has spawned.
It is late in the season.
The water is warm so we will see if we can get some popper action.
If that does not work, we will use intermediate lines and Flashabou flies.
So follow me on a cool trip!
In the first Big Daddy film we made, the FLY TV issue-
-I got a lot of questions about what kind of gear I use-
-what rods I fish with, what kind of lines I use and when I use them.
And what kind of flies I prefer.
I thought I would take five minutes to walk you through this.
Just quickly tell you what I use.
We are going to try to get some action on a popper rod here.
This is the Big Daddy from Vision. It is a 8.5 foot for line 9.
A really nice rod, I fish it with a floating line, same as a Big Daddy line.
I just fish a big popper on a single hook.
They are easy to tie and you can make them in various colours.
They are really cool and give good action in the summertime.
It is a little too cold in the water at the moment,-
-but it is fun when you get them up on the surface.
This is probably what I fish the least of the time with a popper rod.
But it is fun and these rods work really good for other conditions too.
If you are going to buy one rod, or at least one line weight-
-I think you should buy a 909.
And you should rig it with an intermediate line.
That line can be used for almost anything.
You can fish it from the surface and all the way down, to 1.5 metres.
This is a 9 foot for a 9 weight. A 9 foot rod.
I like these foam handles, because they do not get dirty and old.
The action in these rods is softer. It is easy to move these big flies.
I do not prefer these really fast saltwater rods,-
-because I think they are hard to get going when you fish really big flies.
This is my first choice for a rod and the combination with a line.
The second rod I use a lot is the Sig 3.
It is the same rod again, a Big Daddy 909.
This is a Sig 3 line.
It is a line that you can fish a bit deeper with.
You can fish it all the way down to probably 3 metres depending on the fly.
You can go up to a 10 weight if you prefer and fish really big flies.
I think that the 9 weight works really well.
The line weight I fish the least is a Sig 5.
But it is really good to have, just have a spool in the boat.
Or if you go in a river or something like that.
You can get deep down really fast.
Sometimes in the summertime, when the fish is standing in 2 metres of water-
-you need to fish fast. You need to have these fast sinking lines-
-otherwise you cannot get the flies down deep enough to fish it really fast.
If you fish an intermediate line fast, the fly will go up to the surface.
That is why they are really good to have.
I think you should never leave home without a fast sinking line.
Lets talk about the flies I use.
Today, I prefer to fish with a tube fly.
There are a few reasons for it.
Mostly it is because you have a good durability of the flies.
You can fish with them for a long time, you can have a lot of fish on them.
Even when the hook is shot, you can just change it and you are good to go.
You can easiliy have 100 fish on the fly.
I like to fish these natural colours.
These guys imitate a perch.
They are in olive and orange.
They work very good when the fish has spawned and the water is warmer.
They go to these natural colours and start to feed on perch-
-because they start to spawn right after the pike.
And of course, a green and gold. Never leave home without it.
It is a very good colour, it will work almost the whole year around.
And then, a pattern that has worked well in Sweden is the bream pattern.
In the spring and late in the fall, the bream come in big schools in shallow areas.
You need to have really big flies and you want to tie them in gold and silver.
Then they imitate these big breams.
You need to have them big, because the big fish will not take a small bait.
They are feeding on these one pound breams and you need big flies for that.
A pattern that is based on a lure in Sweden. This is called a dirty roach.
It is kind of a dirty roach. It is white, olive green and gold.
These are basically the colours that you could work almost every water with.
And also work in all conditions.
If you just throw in a blue and silver,-
-or a silver bait fish pattern, you can work with most conditions you will face.
That is a good tip of mine.
Keep working with natural colours, imitate kind of match the hatch.
Then you will have a good selection of flies.
Then the question is: How do we rig these guys?
I have a good friend in Denmark, who showed me how to...
Actually, he tied all his pike hooks with a stinger hook.
His name is Thomas and he got me hooked on these
And I have developed it a bit further.
It is a big fly hook and you tie a stinger to it.
This is 60 pound titanium wire and you choose what stinger hook you like.
The good thing is that you can do whatever you like with it.
It will always be straight.
I attach this to a 35 pound wire.
This is a Vision wire and it is coated.
It is really easy to twist and then you take a lighter and burn it.
You put shrink tubes over the joints here and you will not easily fray it.
It is really easy, just make a big loop at the end here.
Then take your fly.
You push it through like that.
And you tie it like that.
You will have a hook that is attached, where the fish will attack for the head.
Then you will have a stinger here in the back, if they just nibble in the back.
A lot of these big fish are usually hooked in the side of the mouth.
If you want this fly to go a little deeper, if you fish it on a floating line-
-you will have a hard time getting it on the surface.
I always carry a box of different coneheads-
-and different kind of beads that you can put in front of it.
This is an XXL cone. They are quite big, but not heavy at all.
This is what I use a lot if I want more jig action to the fly.
You just push that through there, to have it in front of the fly.
Then you just loop this to your nylon on the fly line and you are good to go.
It will create a small sound, as it clicks in the eyes here too.
It is kind of a clicking sound that actually works really good.
It will also get the fly deeper down and give it a jigging action.
It works really well when it is a little bit warmer-
-and the fish is standing in areas where you want to drop the fly and jig it up.
That is basically how I rig them. You can play around with it.
If you want to have really big flies, just push another tube in front of it-
-and you can have these 60 cm flies.
If you want to see how to make these flies and how you tie the hook rig,-
-visit Kanal Gratis's You Tube channel and see a bunch of cool pike patterns.

We have been fishing these areas all around here now-
-with a popper fly, trying to see if we can get some to hit it on the surface.
We had some nice fish falling under the popper, we could see that they-
-were following slightly underneath, but they did not come up and hit it.
I am going back to work the same area again, but with an intermediate line.
And a big Flashabou fly, and see if we can get some action.
Something that is really important is that if you have fish following,-
-if you have an area where you see action, bait fish or something,-
-go over there again with a different fly or line weight to fish it deeper.
Fish closer to the surface, because the fish has its eyes on top of the head.
A big mistake is that you fish under the fish. We will work this area again.
All along the side of the bank here.
The fish spawned in here and they are probably moving out now.
We have big concentrations of bream and hopefully they will come out-
-and start to eat these guys. We will give it a try.
It is a big 40 cm fly on the tube.
We will give it a go.
A good thing is to restrip. Most of you know what this is.
If you have a line basket, you just pull out the line and restrip in the basket.
You get the right line in the right place, and not start with it in the boat.
Nice fish. It just came up and hammered the fly.
We have been fishing poppers for a while, we had some fish following it.
But they did not go up and hit it on the surface.
So I put a yellow and silver tube fly on it. It just hammered it after that.
He got the second cast.
It is a nice fish.
A fat one. I think he just had a bream for breakfast.
When you fish alone for these big fish, and you use a stinger hook on the back,-
-it is easy to snag in your fingers, so I prefer to net these big ones.
I use a rubber net. It is a big net that is coated with rubber.
It is really, really nice for the fish.
It is really easy to calm and hold them in the net like this.
This is a nice fish. It is definitely more than 100 cm.
As you can see, she probably had a bream for breakfast or at least-
-she had it a few days ago.
She will not get hurt at all. I just try to unleash her now.
Or unhook her actually.
Like that.
She was hooked on the stinger hook, in the back of the mouth.
You can see the fin of a bream in there.
I am curious to see the weight of this nice fish.
I just take a pike bag, and get it wet.
So her skin will not be hurt.
We gently put her in here.
There we go.
It also gets a bit dark in the bag, so they get really calm.
When we weigh her, we do not put any tension to her back spine.
It is almost 11 kilos in the bag.
It is somewhere close to 10 kilos.
It is a nice one, a nice evening fish.
It is getting a bit darker now.
We are catching a massive amount of these small fish.
It does not mean that you are in the wrong spot, it can be the right spot.
We see that the small fish are starting to bite heavily and crashing the flies.
It is quite fun actually.
All the fish has spawned and it is almost 20 degrees Celsius in the water.
They like this yellow fly.
Still the same fly.
Pretty hammered.
Not a big one, but they get bigger.
We can catch them in probably ten years or so.
These rocky parts here look really nice. The fish will move out pretty soon.
It actually was a good spot.
Let's give it one more try.
It is cool when they hit the flies on the surface like that.
There it is!
I just love this.
This is so great!
